Types of Assistance
There are many types of assistance that students consider:
- Tuition Reimbursement Programs with Employer.
- VA benefits – All veterans should be speaking with their local VA office about eligibility.
- Federal Direct Stafford Loan.
- Federal and state agencies have programs that provide tuition assistance and sometimes subsistence to eligible students.
- Any sources of private funding that students/parents may access. Home equity loans, trusts, savings plans, employment earnings, etc. may be options.
- Alternative private loans.
Federal Direct Stafford Loan
Students are eligible to participate in the Federal Direct Stafford Loan Program if they:
- Are US citizens or permanent resident of the United States,
- Are enrolled in a degree program,
- Are registered for a minimum of 6 credit hours each semester that are accepted towards the degree program,
- Demonstrate need as determined by federal regulations,
- Do not have an outstanding balance from previous semester of enrollment at Boston University, and
- Are making satisfactory academic progress. Part time students must complete 75 percent of their course load. Student's academic progress is determined by the program of study and handled on a case by case basis.
Applying for Federal Direct Stafford Loan
To process your Free Application for Financial Student Aid (FAFSA) follow the steps below:
- Sign up for a PIN
The PIN serves as your electronic signature and provides access to your personal information in various US Department of Education systems. It takes approximately 3 business days to receive via email.
- Complete a FAFSA application
You must have a PIN assigned prior to completing a FAFSA application.
- Complete Entrance Counseling Form
First time borrowers will need to complete a Federal Direct Loan Master Promissory note.
- Register for online courses. Remember, you must register for a minimum of six credit hours each semester to be eligible.
- Complete the Financial Aid Loan Application and fax the application to the Boston University Metropolitan College Office of Financial Assistance at 617.353.7120. To avoid incurring any late fees, students should try to pay for their tuition upfront via credit card, etc., and apply for a refund with the federal loans. Private Loans
Unlike scholarships and grants, loans must be repaid. Educational loans have more favorable terms than consumer loans. However, because they must be repaid, you should borrow no more than necessary. We encourage students to earn as much as possible from employment and to minimize expenses.
The following lenders and agencies offer these loan programs to half-time degree candidates. Students attending less than half-time should contact the Boston University Metropolitan College Office of Financial Assistance at finanaid@bu.edu for instructions.
Employer-Sponsored Tuition Assistance
Many organizations offer tuition assistance to employees and, in some cases, cover 100% of tuition costs. Programs and policies vary among employers. Consult your personnel office to learn more about tuition assistance at your organization.
If you are eligible for employer-sponsored tuition assistance, please contact an Admissions Representative for more information regarding payment arrangements.
Invest in your Future
Your college education is a great investment. Individuals with a master's degree earn 18 percent more per week than those without a master's degree (U.S. Department of Labor, 2004).
There are many payment plans available for Boston University Graduate students. Please contact our Admissions Department with any questions regarding payment, financial aid information, or scholarship opportunities.
